Just wanted to add some info for anyone interested in oils. Golden’s site has some guidance about when one could possibly use oils and acrylics together. As another person noted, acrylics cannot be applied over oils because they will ultimately peel off. I’m not sure how that would be different with an oil wash because, as i understand it, the acrylics won’t adhere to oils. I think a better option for texture would be using cold wax with oils and applying them with a speedball roller and palette knife. Also, the cold wax speeds the drying of the paint, which would be done in a couple days. In the meantime, one can work on something else. I usually have several going at once, so that there’s always something that’s dry. The dry time is also valuable because it allows you time to study or observe what you’ve done, which invariably informs whatever is done next. Also, walnut oil is the slowest drying oil of the oils used. Linseed oil dries faster. Lavender Spike Oil (which is lavender oil) was used by the masters through today. It speeds drying, thins paint, and is a substitute for turpentine (it can be used to clean brushes). Invaluable information and products (including spike oil, which is use) can be found on naturalpigments.com (i have absolutely no association with the site beyond loving their products and the abundance of information they post about all mediums). I would also note for beginners that it’s important to ensure the oils are applied to a primed surface so it will bind. It’s also best to use separate brushes for oils and acrylics. Just sooooo pretty,and i love the poppies,my favourite flowers.The sun just peeking over the horizon is beautiful,and the warmth it adds as it hits the tops of the flowers even moreso.I really love watching you do these pieces of art.

I purchased some pastels last year and even tried to get that glow, but with no luck. But this piece does not look too complex, so I am going to take it slow, watch this video a hundred times and hopefully achieve that glow. Thank you for breaking it down, so that even beginners can find success.

This is an excellent technique Susan. I got the Uart 400 paper and it seems to rough. I order a sheet of 500,600 and 800 for me to compare. I went to Blick and the only had 400 in stock so bought 1 sheet. This is a beautiful painting.

I was an elementary art teacher for almost 31 years, and using oil pastels were among my kids favorite things to do. I knew enough to help them, but I always did oil paintings. Awhile back, I had an accident, and have been unable to stand at my easel and paint my larger canvases, so I decided to try oil pastels. Well, it’s not as easy as you make it look, and I soon realized I was clueless about how to proceed, so I was happy to accidentally find you on uTube. I knew they washed off my hands, so I knew they were water soluble, so I naively started on my journey. I was scribbling something on a piece of paper, and started with a very abstract image, which ‘wept” so much that I had to tape my mouth shut! I have started a still life, , but……. It is not nearly as easy as oil painting. but I will get up in the morning and see if I have any alcohol. I didn’t mean to write a letter, but I wanted you to know how great full I feel to have found you. Maryann,
